The Postal Service of Aruba began operating on August 1, 1892, when Aruba was part of the "Colony Curaçao" Postal Service, with its central directorate in Willemstad, Curaçao.
The first postal activities on the island consisted of sending and receiving mail (letters, parcels, and more) from boats originating from Curaçao and sometimes Venezuela. Garibaldi Cephas Helder took care of handling the boats carrying mail. Residents had to pick up their mail at the post office after Garibaldi announced the arrival of a boat at the harbour of Oranjestad, ringing his bell from mouth to mouth. People used whatever transportation they had available: horses, donkeys, boats, but mostly on foot.
Aruba, as part of the Dutch Colonies, has been a member of the Universal Postal Union since 1878. On January 1, 1986, the Postal Service of Aruba entered the Status Aparte within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and became an independent postal service, remaining, together with the Netherlands Antilles, a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
The Government of Aruba recruited the Dutch consultancy firm Berenschot to help formalize a postal service that could stand on its own within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. An internal committee, consisting of Robert S. Arends, Candido F. Dijkhoff, Rudolf R. de Kort, and Michael F. Croes, was formed to help achieve this.
From the onset of the Status Aparte, Aruba lobbied to join the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (UPAEP) together with the Netherlands Antilles, finally achieving membership on June 21, 1993.
The first official post office was located at the office/home of Governor Jacob A. Thielen, on what is now known as Plaza Daniel Leo, before moving through several locations over the years, including Fort Zoutman and what is now the Foreign Affairs Office. In 1958, the main post office moved to J.E. Irausquin Plein #9, where it remains today. The building was designed by Mr. A.A. van Ammers, Manager of the Department of Public Services, and reflects design elements of the 1930s–1950s.
On September 1, 2005, Post Aruba N.V. was privatized. Through privatization, our main goal became becoming an integrated company that not only delivers letters and parcels, but offers a broad variety of new products while playing a key role in all communication needs on the island, increasing operational efficiency, and maintaining high international standards.
